PHS students reflect on 9/11 in poetry

Tuesday, September 11th is also known as Patriot Day (9/11).

September 11, 2001 was a defining moment in American history. Steve Missal, Social Studies Supervisor writes, As we begin a new school year, teachers at every level are grappling with the challenge of helping their students to confront, and make sense of, the horrific events of that day.

Mrs. Tiffany Corbett was teaching U.S. History 1 at the time the World Trade Center was attacked. Those students have since graduated. The students I have in Sociology and U.S. History 2 in 2007-2008 were in Grades 4, 5 and 6 on September 11, 2001.

The directions for this 10-minute DO NOW assignment was to write a Cinquain (Diamond) poem about their experience six years ago on the day of September 11, 2001. Follow the directions under each line to know how to write a cinquain poem. In poetry, a cinquain or quintain is a 5 line stanza, varied in rhyme and line.

One word – title of your poem

Two words describing something you saw

Three action words

Four words (phrase) that explain a feeing you had
during this experience

Synonym for title

The following are written by my PHS students on September 11-12, 2007:
